Guam Daily Post – The 34th Guam Youth Congress introduced a new resolution that sheds light on the abrupt cut in scholarship funding for Federated States of Micronesia students at the University of Guam.
The FSM National Congress, through Public Law No. 23-24, recently passed appropriations for fiscal year 2024.
Only $500,000 was set for the National Scholarship Fund, showing an 83% decrease compared to the previous $3 million appropriation in fiscal year 2023.
Resolution 15-34, introduced by Rep. Austin Gaizmer Fortuno, aims to highlight the challenges FSM students face and urges the national government of the Federated States of Micronesia to consider their concerns due to the vast reduction in scholarship funding.
The cuts have created uncertainty and concern among the students benefiting from the FSM National Scholarship and Financial Assistance Program.
“These students are now facing potential adverse impacts on their dreams and aspirations, hindering their ability to access quality education and pursue their chosen fields of study,” according to a recent press release from the Guam Youth Congress.
In addition, the resolution emphasizes the need for open communication between the FSM national government and the government of Guam to find equal solutions, ensuring a stable pursuit of higher education by FSM students at the University of Guam.
“Resolution No. 15-34 (COR) is a call to action, highlighting the urgent need to support FSM youth at the University of Guam. These students deserve our unwavering backing in securing their educational future, fostering collaboration between Micronesian and Guamanian communities to address this critical issue,” Fortuno stated.
If passed, the resolution will be transmitted to Wesley Simina, president of the Federated States of Micronesia, and Edmund Moses, speaker of the Congress of the Federated States of Micronesia, among others.
