Hangaripaii, a proud Tobian from the serene island of Hatohobei in Palau, etched his name in Tobian history as the first Tobian, people from Hatohobei, to tackle the Honolulu Marathon. This remarkable feat not only showcased his tenacity but also shattered stereotypes as a 54-year-old runner completing the race.
On December 12, 2023, Marcus Hangaripaii stood among thousands of participants in the Honolulu Marathon. The course, renowned for its scenic beauty and challenging terrain, witnessed Marcus’s steady strides as he conquered each mile. Crossing the finish line in 5 hours, 24 minutes, and 27 seconds, Marcus not only completed the marathon but also set a benchmark for future Tobian runners.
Marcus Hangaripaii’s historic run is a significant event among his people. His story reinforces the belief that passion knows no age, and with dedication, individuals can achieve extraordinary feats, breaking barriers and setting new standards for generations to come.
As a member of a small community, Hangaripaii has other achievements worth noting. He has achieved 2 Masters Degree and is a member of the US Army. Hangaripaii is not only a leader, but he is an example of how great Palauans can be.
We asked Hangaripaii if he was going to do it again next year and his response is: “I’m going to wear a tahatah (traditional thu) next year!”
