Fiji Times – Fiji urgently needs a Drug Free Sports Act, or the nation can bid goodbye to its chances of competing at international tournaments.
While delivering the Fiji National Sports Commission 2020-2021 Annual Report before the Standing Committee on Social Affairs this week, executive chair Peter Mazey said they had been waiting for the national sports policy for some time.
“This is our problem. It’s been ongoing for quite some time, and I think it’s due to be going to Parliament quite soon,” he said. “We have been working on it.
“We’re promised that there are a number of policies that sports is missing. Our safety and sports policy needs ratification of drug-free sports.
“If we can’t get the drug free sports act passed this year in Parliament, Fiji will not be competing in any other Olympics or any international events worldwide.
“We’ve received our warnings and the act is being prepared as we speak.
“But it was supposed to have been done by July 31.” He said they were working very closely with the ministry and with Drug Free Sport Fiji Program to get this in place.
“What happened here is that because Fiji is now no longer a tier three, a tier four nation because we’ve won gold medals in the Olympics and at World Cup events, we are now upgraded and have to have our own drug free sports act in place.”
“I’m happy to have that passed on for everybody to support us in that because we (need to be) quite urgent in getting that done.”
