Fiji Times – With less than two minutes on the clock until the final hooter, the Solomon Islands Futsal side managed to slot in a golden goal against Vanuatu in the Extra Supermarket Melanesian Cup to win their second match of the tournament, beating their Melanesian counterpart 5-4.
Though the men in green were the first to put points on the board, the Vanuatu side were able to equalise as both were tied 4 all towards the end of the match.
Solomon head coach Damon Shaw said he was impressed with his side’s performance, at the same time giving credit to Solomon fans present at the Vodafone Arena today.
“The boys played well today, they managed to execute most of the phases we have been training over the past few weeks,” Shaw said.
Despite the well earned victory, Shaw said there were a few areas they needed to work on before they face the Digicel Fiji Futsal side in their next match.
“We know Fiji will be playing a very physical match and we will need to prepare ourselves very well.
There’s just a few areas we need to work on but apart from that, the boys played well tonight.”
Shaw said they needed to be performing at their best throughout the tournament, as all teams will be looking to defeat the renowned Solomon side.
“Since we’re the only ones to have been through to the World Cup, all teams in the competition will be looking for a win against us.”
Before facing Vanuatu side last night, Shaw said they were expecting a tough battle from them and were not surprised when they came out firing.
“Hats off to Vanuatu for pushing the boys the their limits, they really took us to the final minute.”
