A Honolulu police officer has been charged with murder in the fatal shooting of a 16-year-old. Two other police officers are facing attempted murder charges as well. The shooting ended a high-speed chase on Kalakaua Avenue in Honolulu. If convicted, the police officers could face up to life sentences with possibility of parole. Two of the three officers have been with the force for at least three years, while one has served ten years.
Prosecuting Attorney Steve Alm said his office reviewed more than 1,300 pages of police reports, 70 body camera videos and 40 videos from other nearby cameras.
According to charging documents, the officer charged with murder, said Sykap rammed the stolen car involved in the shooting into his patrol car.
But the vehicle had minor paint chips and scuff marks, the documents said.
Officers also stated they saw an object that looked like a gun on the front passenger’s lap, but the prosecutors said body camera footage shows a thin object not looking like a firearm.
Photos of the crime scene shows bullet projections aimed at the back of the head points out an intent to kill.
Hawaii News Now reported a similar but unrelated case that Honolulu will be paying a settlement of $1 million to the family members of Cameron Johnson who was shot in the chest as he rammed his pickup truck into an officer’s vehicle trying to escape.
